Despite my Volvo’s continued good health, I maintain a list of eventual replacements. R ight now, the Bangle 530xi (all wheel drive, naturally aspirated straight six) is on that list. Why is this car a good/ terrible idea?

How unreliable and in what ways?

I’m also ugly, so that’s not a negative for me

Bangle era BMWs are so pretty. I’ve always looked at these longingly thinking a 535xi would be perfect up here in the mountains and also in my driveway.  I know nothing about the reliability sorry.

Gaskets other than the head gaskets leak, coils, and maybe the water pump.

I bought mine almost two years and some 23k miles ago and so far it’s been more reliable than the ‘99 Accord I had before. I needed a long distance Autobahn weapon and it’s perf ect at that. Those comfort seats are perfect, especially if you are tall.

I’d advise to go for an LCI, or facelift in layman’s terms, car. They improved a lot of stuff with that facelift.

If you have any specific questions ask away! And don’t let the keyboard mechanics tell you it’s an unreliable piece of shit because apparently all German cars are.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but when properly maintained they last and are reliable.

It’s a terrible idea because it’s a BMW.

And that’s my biased opinion based on absolutely no research on that specific model.

The N52 is a great motor and overall drivetrai n is good. B ut with any aging BMW get ready for random electrical shit to go bad . Also oil leaks depending on mileage. TPS sensors, Wheel Speed, Wheel position sensor, leveling, and so on.

Its more just due to age of the car and BMW plastic is shit.

I wouldn’t know since I’m neither. Now I’m off to accept a position in the White House

As a 2-time E60 owner (but not the xi), I’d say: valve seals, fuel pump (though shouldn’t have the issues that the later TT engines’ HPFP had— my 535 had 3 HPFPs replaced, was on its 4th when I sold it with 78K miles), coolant pump (my 535's went right about exactly at 60K, right on schedule), and general cleanliness of the top end of the engine. The straight 6s of this era tend to gunk up by about 75-80K miles, leading to rough idle, worse fuel economy, and eventually a top-end overhaul.

But it shouldn’t have the problems that that goddamn V8 did.
